Piura and Puno were the most affected regions. The effects on agriculture meant the loss of 120 thousand hectares and the reduction of cotton and potato. 2'600 .000 also killed cattle.

In late 1997, hot as hell indicated the arrival of a new phenomenon El Niño. For five months the whole country was affected with overflowing rivers, floods, landslides and torrential rains. Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque and Ica were most affected. The material losses amounted to three billion dollars. It lost 250 thousand hectares of farmland across the country. Child left 340 dead and over 545 thousand victims.
